GSM Glossary

1G First Generation Technology. Featured in the period which began in the late 1970s and lasted through the 1980s. These systems featured the first true mobile phone systems, known at first as "cellular mobile radio telephone." These networks used analog voice signaling, and were little more sophisticated than repeater networks used by amateur radio operators.
2G Second Generation. Known as the GSM era. This site was built in the 2G times.
3G Third Generation. Released recently, 3G promises high data rates which will incorporate new software to be used with cellular technology.
4G Forth Generation. Will be released in around 2010. Increased data rates from 3G and basically it will make Mobile Phones into Computers.
CEPT European Conference of Post and Telecommunications. CEPT is a collaborative organization for telecommunications regulators in 43 European countries.
GPRS General Packet Radio Service. A standard for wireless communications which runs at speeds up to 115 kilobits per second. Suited to sending emails and connecting to the internet.
GSM Groupe Spécial Mobile or Global System for Mobile communications. It is the mobile network standard in over 60 countries throughout Europe and Asia.
Hard Drive Computer Hardware. Stores data.
IP Internet Protocol. A set of specification/rules the internet uses to give information. An IP is also a number that specifically is assigned to a computer which identifies it on the Internet.
Mbps Millions of bits per second or megabits per second.
MHz 1 MHz represents 1 million cycles per second.
MMS Multimedia Messaging Service. Can send text, images and sound.
Realtones Realtones can be used as ringtones. Realtones can play tunes with voices.
Ringtones A ringtone is a sound which plays when the phone is taking an incoming call.
SIM Subscriber Identity Module. A plastic thumb sized card which goes into your phone. Contains the owners details and phone book.
SMS Short Message Service. The most popular feature of a GSM mobile. Allows users to send messages of up to 160 characters to other cell phone users.
WAP Wireless Application Protocol. A set of specifications/rules a wireless device gets information of the Internet.
